Improv Wisdom Tips

Onderstaand is het Advies van Patricia Ryan Madson, auteur van het boek Improv Wisdom: Don’t Prepare, Just Show Up (Stanford University, California, USA)

“When doing a presentation, or taping your pitch it is common to want to “get it right” to “get it perfect” and to “look smart and cool.” Give up on all of these! You are more likely to do well, if you take the pressure off of yourself by just doing “an average job.” Being natural is more effective than being slick!

Studies on effective speaking all conclude that your presentation skill is 85% more important than your content in getting your message across. That is, viewers need to see you as trustworthy, sincere, and someone who seems real. To find that “natural” way of being in front of a camera, try the following tips.

For a compelling video pitch I recommend the following advice:

1. Speak spontaneously, improvise what you have to say, using natural language. Don’t memorize your speech or read it. This will result in a “canned feeling” or a stiff, rehearsed look. To prepare, it is fine to write it out, or type it or even tape record your remarks, but when it comes to the actual taping of the pitch, speak in your own words. You can start anywhere. Look directly into the camera. Think of it as a good friend, who likes you. TALK to it, don’t recite.

2. Consider asking yourself a question that you can answer: “What makes your product/service a great value or a neat thing to own?” “What excites you about X?” “How did you come up with the idea?”

3. Don’t talk too fast. Don’t be afraid of silence or using pauses. (These add authority to speech). Breathe. Don’t wander all over the place. Give yourself a strong foundation. In other words, stand reasonably still. Avoid “errrrrrr” sounds as place-holders. Instead of saying “errrrr’ take a breath, or swallow, be silent if necessary, and then move on.

4. Smile, and enjoy the ride!”

Enjoy the ride!!
